January. January, please tell me true,
In this new year for me, what have you?
Will you be the new place I can begin,
Or will you let sluggy apprehension creep in?
Will each day leave me uplifted and grinning,
Or find me sinking, rudderless, and spinning?
Will you allow hope to thrive and grow,
Or will you alter and avert my flow?
Will you let me conceive and scheme and dream,
Or knock the wind from my sails and extinguish my steam?
Will you allow my resolutions to take deepened root,
Or will you poison the sweet and plentiful fruit?
Will you fuel my motivation to cultivate the best,
Or bitter the juice and sour the zest?
Will you bolster and boost my renewed vigor,
Or will last year’s exhaustion remain insurmountably bigger?
January listened then said quietly,
What do I have for you? Honey, what will YOU do with me?
Why have you put this all on me?
Your life is your responsibility.
What are you doing to ignite your spark,
To feed your flame and illuminate the dark?
How will you fuel your heart’s exhilaration,
Keep your foot on the gas for max acceleration?
How will you keep your soul’s hope alive,
that gritty determination for which we all strive?
How will you remain steadfast to your intention,
Full of tenacity, drive, and focused attention?
How will you break free from the muck holding you back,
Remember you’re worth it to keep moving on track?
How will you vanquish fear lurking deep in your being,
remember you’re stronger than anything you’re fleeing?
How will you unbind from all that was endured last year,
release all the trauma, the strife, and the fear?
Why ask me what I’ll do for you?
That matters not, for life’s what you choose.
You’re in charge of your one, precious existence
Now sort out your thoughts so your heart goes the distance.
